Wayne Rooney is set to play for Manchester United again – despite being Plymouth manager!

The 38-year-old became a legend at Old Trafford during his playing days, spending 13 years with the club between 2004 and 2017.

Rooney won the lot with United, including five Premier League titles, before being cut loose by Jose Mourinho seven years ago.

He is currently in charge of Championship side Plymouth, having been appointed earlier this summer.

But Rooney is now set to play for United once again.

The former England skipper is set to represent Manchester United’s legends team against Celtic on September 7.

His last match for United ended in victory, with the fallen giants beating Ajax 2-0 to win the Europa League back in 2017.

Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, who had been recruited from Borussia Dortmund and Juventus respectively the previous year, fired them to glory.

United have also confirmed a host of other legends will take to the field when they go up against Celtic.

Paul Scholes is one hero who will wear their iconic red and white colours again, having retired from football in 2013.

Nicky Butt, Dimitar Berbatov, Antonio Valencia, Darren Fletcher, Anders Lindegaard and Wes Brown have also been confirmed to take part in the match.

Lindegaard, speaking recently, said he was ‘very excited’.

“I’m very excited about it,” said the Dane, who often struggled for game time during his spell at Old Trafford.

“It’s such a great honour for me, and everyone playing in these games, and I’m very excited to come back.

“Once you’ve played for Manchester United, you always miss it a little bit, so to feel part of the club again – even for a day – is special.

Since then, however, Plymouth have improved.

They beat Cheltenham 3-0 in the Carabao Cup courtesy of goals from Ben Waine, Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu.

And Plymouth followed up that result with a 1-1 draw against Hull on Saturday, with Lewis Coyle earning a draw for the Tigers after Ibrahim Cissoko had opened the scoring.
