Niall McGinn’s injury-time striker gave Glentoran their first points of the Sports Direct Premiership season thanks to a 2-1 win over Portadown.

In a dramatic climax to a thrilling second half, McGinn’s deflected shot hit unfortunate Portadown defender Lee Chapman and looped over helpless goalkeeper Aaron McCarey.

Jordan Jenkins had put the Glens in front after just nine minutes, finishing off a superbly executed counter-attack with a cool finish from just inside the box to give the Glens a dream start.

Cammy Palmer and Charlie Lindsay had other chances in the first half, but while the Glens continued to see opportunities missed they remained vulnerable as Portadown began to exert more and more pressure after the break, and that’s how it turned out 13 minutes from time.

Ryan Mayse latched on to Palmer’s headed clearance at a corner and arrowed a shot across goal into the bottom corner of the net that looked like securing a point until McGinn’s late strike denied Portadown their first point since returning to the Sports Direct Premiership.
