While the warmer weather may have led to some uncomfortable nights, experts recommend washing your pyjamas every two to three uses to avoid sweat smells and stains.

Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, said: “Many of us are guilty of not washing our pyjamas often enough. When considering how much we sweat when we sleep, I’d recommend washing your pyjamas every two-three uses to keep them as clean and hygienic as possible.

“Not only this but keeping your sleepwear clean will also increase their life span.”

Even with regular rotation, nightwear may require extra care, reports the Mirror. She said: “Depending on the fabric type, hand washing may be the ideal cleaning method for your pyjamas. Delicate materials like silk, wool, and viscose should avoid machine washing to prevent damage.

“Handwashing allows for gentle treatment, preventing any wear or tear. When hand-washing your pyjamas, use a gentle detergent or natural solution such as a mixture of two tablespoons of lemon juice (costing only 10p) with two cups of lukewarm water.”

“Alternatively, you can use two tablespoons of white vinegar (costing 3p) with two cups of lukewarm water. These natural solutions are gentler on fabrics, less likely to irritate the eyes or skin and are more sustainable in the long run.”

“Linen and linen blend nightwear can be washed in the washing machine on a warm cycle. These fabrics are more durable and can handle the gentle agitation of the machine, ensuring they stay clean without compromising their quality.”

Jessica also recommends air drying when possible to prevent shrinking in the dryer and if you do wash your PJs in the machine, she advises against using fabric softener.

She added: “Using too much fabric softener or bleach can ruin your clothes instead of removing stains and brightening clothes.

“This can cause them to deteriorate over time and can strip the fabric of their texture. Using too much may also cause skin irritation”.
