Emma Raducanu missed both Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati due to her ‘body feeling it’ following her run in Washington, according to her coach’s sister.

The 21-year-old opted to skip the Olympics due to the change in surface back to clay after the grasscourt season.

Instead, Raducanu decided to head Stateside early to build on her preparations for the US Open.

She impressed at the Citi Open in reaching the quarter-final before losing a close match to Paula Badosa.

It was then expected Raducanu would compete in at least one of the Masters 1000 events in Canada or Cincinnati, however she was snubbed a wildcard invite for either tournament.

Her ranking was too low to qualify for the main draw in either tournament and opted against going through qualifiers.

Naomi Cavaday – sister of Raducanu’s coach Nick Cavaday – has now provided some insight into why Raducanu chose not to try and qualify for either event.

While on commentary duty for the Cincinnati Open, Naomi was questioned by fellow commentator Laura Robson about Raducanu’s decision.

She replied: “I think viewing it as extra matches, she got some wins in Washington, pretty happy with the level.

“Body feeling it a touch, trying to keep that managed.”

But Naomi went on to play down any injury concerns for the former British No 1, adding she would have considered playing if there was a wildcard on offer.

“I mean, I think if she’d have had a wildcard into the main draw, she would have considered playing,” she said.

“I’m sure she considered playing in qualifying as well.”

But Naomi was unable to provide information on whether Raducanu would play in another event before the US Open.

“I’m not privy to the scheduling decisions I’m afraid,” she added.

The US Open gets underway in just under two weeks and Raducanu won’t have to go through qualifying to enter the main draw.

She’s risen back up to 70th in the world rankings and she will climb even higher if she competes in an event next week.

Raducanu could play in either the Monterrey Open or the Tennis in the Land competition, but she hasn’t been confirmed for either event so far.
