Gary Lineker feels Pep Guardiola ‘might be interested’ in taking the England job if he was offered it.

The Manchester City boss has strongly indicated that the upcoming campaign will be his last at the Etihad.

His current contract expires in 2025 and is yet to indicate that he’s willing to extend his stay.

The Spaniard has already secured his place as one of the greatest Premier League managers of all time having won six titles in eight years in charge of City.

Guardiola also hinted that he could be interested in making the move into international football.

That sparked speculation on whether he would be a target for England, who are still on the lookout for Gareth Southgate’s permanent replacement.

The FA announced last week that Lee Carsley was set to take charge on an interim basis for the start of the Nations League campaign next month.

He said: “Carsley will step up from his role in charge of the Men’s U21s, initially for September’s fixtures away to Republic of Ireland and at home to Finland.

“But with a view to remaining in the position throughout autumn while the FA’s recruitment process for a new permanent head coach continues.”

However, Lineker feels the FA should explore the possibility of snapping up Guardiola following his recent comments.

“I did see an interview a few days ago with Pep Guardiola where he was asked in a press conference if he would be interested in England,” Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“And you know, mostly people put that away, but he certainly didn’t.

“And it made me think the way he was talking; I thought he actually might be interested in this job.

“And the fact that they’ve appointed Carsley as an interim coach and the fact Pep’s contract ends at the end of the season… however, I’m maybe having a little bit of wishful thinking here!”
