Petrol bombs and fireworks have been thrown at police officers in Derry during disorder which poses “a serious risk” to residents.

The PSNI says it is currently dealing with “sporadic disorder” in Nailors Row area of the city with a number of officers injured.

“We are working to bring the situation under control and urge people to avoid the area in the meantime,” a spokesperson said earlier on Saturday evening.

In an update they appealed to parents to “come and bring their children home”.

“We have seen petrol bombs, fireworks and heavy masonry thrown at police during disorder in Nailors Row this evening. A number of our officers have been injured,” the spokesperson said.

“We are liaising with community representatives to prevent further escalation, and ask parents/guardians to come and bring their children home.

“This disorder is presenting a serious risk to the safety of residents in the area.”

Sinn Féin councillor and former mayor of Derry City and Strabane Sandra Duffy has appealed for calm.

“Ongoing petrol bomb attacks on police at Bishop Street are a disgrace and must stop now,” she said.

“I am also concerned about vulnerable and elderly residents at Alexander House who do not need this activity on their doorstep.

“A small number of young people are involved in these attacks.

Ms Duffy appealed urged other young people not to get caught up in the violence “as it could have a negative impact on their future”.

“These futile actions are wrong and they are not representative of this city,” she said.

“They are in stark contrast to the hugely positive work and positive community events taking place across the Bogside this week.”
