Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has emphasized the importance of Pension Credit, describing it as a “superpower” and “gateway” benefit that can unlock additional support from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The financial expert urged pensioners to get Pension Credit, highlighting the significant advantages of claiming it in the latest edition of the Money Saving Expert newsletter.

Martin wrote in the latest Money Saving Expert newsletter: “Pension credit has a superpower… it’s a gateway entitlement triggering many other boons. If you’re entitled to the Guarantee Credit element, this also entitles you to a host of other state protections.”

Eligible pensioners can receive a wealth of benefits, including council tax reductions potentially worth thousands, a free TV licence for those aged 75 or older, and the Warm Home Discount. Detailing further privileges, he added: “If you’re entitled to the Guarantee Credit element, this also entitles you to a host of other state protections, including – as we’ve already discussed – the Winter Fuel Payment this winter.”

Other perks include: “Free TV licence for over-75s (worth £169.50/yr). Housing Benefit worth £1,000s for some renters. Council tax reduction. This can be worth £1,000s/yr. Energy bill reductions. This includes £25/wk Cold Weather Payments and the £150 Warm Home Discount.”

The newsletter also mentioned additional entitlements such as free dental care and eyewear vouchers under the umbrella of Pension Credit benefits. An annual standard colour TV licence currently costs £169.50/year and, as of August 2020, most over-75s no longer get their licences for free, reports BirminghamLive.

However, there are a few exceptions, including if you’re claiming Pension Credit, in which case you’re entitled to a free tv license each year. To claim, you need to apply for a free licence via the TV licencing website. If you think you’re eligible, but can’t apply online, call the TV Licencing helpline on 0300 790 6117 and request an application form.
