Portaferry runner Ciara Mageean has withdrawn from Tuesday’s 1500m heats in Paris due to injury.

In her final weeks of preparation for the Olympic Games the European champions suffered a chronic Achilles issues.

The Team Ireland athlete had hoped to fight through the pain, but the 32 year-old has been forced to withdraw from the Games.

Mageean said: “I’m absolutely heartbroken not to be able to compete in my third Olympic Games. I gave it everything to make it possible to be on the start line, but time was against me. I want to thank everyone for all their support.”
