A popular speciality café in Ballymena is set to close, it has been announced.

Chocoa on Bryan Street in the town has said their last day of trading will take place on August 31.

The café, which offers hot chocolate drinks and treats, has been trading for eight years. It is owned by Stuart Elliott, the former professional footballer who won 38 caps and netted four goals for Northern Ireland.

Mr Elliott is involved in property development and set up the café with his wife Laura-Lee.

Posting on social media, they said the business would continue to operate online.

“Of course we ain’t gonna leave you completely,” they said. “We have simply decided to pivot Chocoa in another direction with our online platform. We will most definitely be keeping you all stocked up on all that liquid velvety, caramely, creamy, chocolatey goodness you’ve come to know and love from Chocoa, amongst all our other delicious treats and much more to come.”

They added: “We set out to design and create a space that was as equally welcoming to all and everyone felt just that little bit special. Seeking out and serving up the best quality produce and creating a brand identity that has become a household name.”

They advised fans of the café to keep an eye on their website for updates:

“There comes a time when business decisions need to be made from the head and not the heart…and Chocoa has been most definitely an expression of the heart.

“This weekend has also marked eight years in business so we felt this [was] a fitting time. We are immensely proud of all we have achieved.”

They paid tribute to an “epic” journey with the brand and asked for the public to show their support over the coming weeks.

The news was met with sadness as many flocked to pay tribute to Chocoa and speak of their disappointment. “So sorry to hear this but sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. Chocoa will be missed,” said one supporter.

Another said: “Oh no, so sad, my favourite place .Wishing you all the best for the future.”

Meanwhile, another poster said: “My favourite place to go – food and sweet treats are all yummy.” She added: “Sorry to hear [you] are closing. Wish you all the best in next chapter.”
