Former Celtic manager and Northern Ireland captain Neil Lennon has announced his mother has died.

On Saturday, it was announced Lennon had returned home from his duties as manager of Rapid Bucharest due to a family emergency.

According to the Romanian club, the Northern Irishman’s mother was in “a very serious condition” after suffering a second heart attack following several weeks in hospital.

In a post on social media this afternoon, released via Rapid, the Lurgan-born former footballer confirmed his mother Ursula had died.

“My beautiful mother, Ursula, passed away this morning at 10:51,” the post read, alongside a photograph of Lennon.

The former NI manager’s former club Celtic also paid tribute on social media.

“The heartfelt thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with our former captain and manager, Neil Lennon, and his family following the sad passing of Neil’s beloved mother, Ursula, earlier today,” the post read.

Former Celtic, Bolton and Hibernian boss Lennon, 53, was appointed by Rapid in May and has come under pressure from fans in recent weeks.
