Riot police have swarmed in to separate protesters and counter protesters as fireworks have been thrown during clashes in Belfast.

Anti-immigration protesters have gathered in protest in the Northern Ireland capital, in similar fashion to other towns and cities across the UK.

In rather surprising scenes however, protesters carrying both Union Jack flags and the Tricolour have been pictured marching together in the anti-immigration rally.

Anti-racist counter protesters have also gathered around the area, with the situation quickly escalating between the two groups.

There have been reports of fireworks and other projectiles being thrown between the two groups in the city centre, as the numbers attending both rallies grow.

A woman has been struck and injured by a firework thrown by anti-immigration protesters, with paramedics treating her at the scene.

Police officers wearing riot gear have tried to separate the groups and restore order, using land rovers to break up the masses.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesperson said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland is aware of several planned protests across Northern Ireland today and will be in attendance to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
