Ireland’s boxing woes continued at the Paris Olympics as Michaela Walsh was beaten by Bulgaria’s Svetlana Staneva in the women’s 57kg category.

The Bulgarian won a cagey first round on all five judge’s cards meaning Walsh had to try and go on the offensive in the second stanza but Staneva was able to keep her distance and pick off the Irish fighter to take the second round 4-1 despite a late flurry from Walsh.

The pattern remained the same in the final round with the Bulgarian winning out by unanimous decision.

The defeat means Kellie Harrington will be Ireland’s only boxing medalist with the Dublin native facing into a semi-final against Brazil’s Beatriz Ferreira in the 60kg division as she continues the defence of her crrown.
