A man has been arrested after four police officers were kicked and spat at.

The officers were assaulted while dealing with a report of an assault in Newry in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Inspector Woods said: “We received a report at around 12.40am of a fight in the Bank Parade area of Newry.

“Officers attended and located a 22-year-old man who was injured.

“The officers took the man to a hospital in Newry for treatment to his injuries, where he became aggressive and assaulted four police officers – he kicked two officers, spat on one and pulled another by their belt. He also spat on a nurse.

“He was arrested on suspicion of common assault, criminal damage and four counts of assault on police.

“Thankfully none of our officers received serious injuries and were able to remain on duty.

“However, to be clear, assaults on police and emergency staff are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated as simply being ‘part of the job’.”
