Former Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern has announced his retirement from football.

The Fermanagh man has decided to hang the gloves up at the age of 40. He finished his club career with Hearts after a short loan spell at Livingston.

McGovern made 32 senior international appearances and produced one of the finest displays by a Northern Ireland keeper when he frustrated Germany in a 1-0 defeat in the Parc des Princes at Euro 2016.

His team-mates applauded him after the match following his heroics against the World champions to keep his country in the tournament.

He stated on ‘X’, formerly Twitter: “New beginnings!! After 23 seasons playing professional football, I have decided to hang up the gloves. I’m deeply grateful to all the coaches, teammates, and fans who have supported me throughout the years.

“A special thank you to my family for all the sacrifices they have made so I could chase my dreams. I look forward to my next adventure as Head of Goalkeeping at Queens Park Football Club.”

Since moving to Celtic at the beginning of his career, he featured for several clubs in Scotland including Falkirk, Ross County and Hamilton, along with Norwich City.
