The PSNI said: “Police are currently at the scene of a fire in the Richill Park area of Derry/Londonderry.

“There are no further details at present.”

The site, which opened in 1980, was closed by the council in 2015 and replaced by the Foyle Arena in St Columb’s Park.

In January of this year, Derry City and Strabane District Council confirmed that the procurement process in relation to the disposal of the former Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre site had closed.

“A preferred bidder has been appointed. An announcement around the preferred bidder and the future plans for the site will be made once the legal process in relation to the Agreement for Lease and associated contractual requirements is concluded,” a council spokesperson said.

In 2021 a decision to sell centre was ‘abandoned’ and the site placed on the market again.

Discount store, Home Bargains, had been identified as the ‘preferred bidder’.

However, concerns then emerged about the tender process.
