A 31-year-old woman and an eight-year-old girl have died in a house fire in Huddersfield which is being treated as “suspicious” by West Yorkshire Police.

Officers say a 10-year-old girl is in hospital in a critical condition after emergency services were called to Leeds Road at 2.24am.


West Yorkshire Police say they are treating the incident as “suspicious” but are not looking for anyone else in connection with the fire.

In a statement, the force said: “Investigations into the fire are in their early stages, we are currently treating it as suspicious.

“However we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.”

Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said: “Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident.

“Specially trained officers are supporting the family.”

Neighbours in the area have shared their devastation following the horror fire.

“Everybody is just devastated. We all knew her. She has been here for a few years – her and the kids,” one local resident told the Yorkshire Live.

“She was a nice lady. It’s so sad. I hope and pray for the girls. I just hope they are ok. I feel really sad and gutted. She was a lovely lady.”

Five scenes of crime officers were spotted working through areas of the property on Wednesday afternoon.
