The committee was set up in 1973 and has worked to assess the impact of Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak Brexit deals.

Former Tory MP Sir Bill Cash, who chaired the committee for 14 years, claimed that the Prime Minister was acting like a “dictator” by having his government abolish a scrutiny body that has been in existence for decades.

He claims that removing the committee with only a one-line whip and no statement from a government minister at the dispatch box is “unthinkable”, accusing the government of “ripping up the democratic process” to cozy up to the EU.

The European Scrutiny Committee has scrutinised tens of thousands of laws since 1973 via the standing laws of Parliament using its sovereignty, including laws relating to important matters such as Northern Ireland.

Starmer has said he wants to “reset” relations with the UK’s allies in Europe, while also stating that any negotiations on trade arrangements will not involve re-joining the EU or freedom of movement.

Pro-Remain Labour MP Stella Creasey said that “it’s right that Parliament has a role in the scrutiny of what happens with our relationship with Europe”.

Speaking to GB News’ Christopher Hope, she said: “I think it’s understandable that people are asking, where is this conversation going to happen? And I’d like to be part of that conversation.

“I think there’s a really strong story to tell about why we need to act.”

As we have left the EU, the committee has no clear function which is not carried out by others, so the Leader of the House has rescinded the standing order.

Committees may choose to scrutinise all aspects of the EU-UK relationship.
