Huw Edwards has been charged with making indecent images of children, months after resigning from the BBC.

The veteran BBC newsreader, 62, officially quit the broadcaster in April after 40 years on the job.

He now faces three charges over alleged activity between December 2020 and April 2022.

These are thought to be linked to images shared on WhatsApp, police said.

Edwards is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Huw Edwards, 62 (18.08.1961) of Southwark, London has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children following a Met Police investigation.

“Edwards was arrested on 8 November 2023. He was charged on Wednesday, 26 June following authorisation from the Crown Prosecution Service.

“He has been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 31 July.

“Media and the public are strongly reminded that this is an active case. Nothing should be published, including on social media, which could prejudice future court proceedings.”

The father-of-five officially resigned from the BBC three months ago after building a huge career with the corporation.

In April, a short statement from the BBC read: “Huw Edwards has resigned and left the BBC.

“After 40 years of service, Huw explained that his decision was made on the basis of advice. The BBC has accepted his resignation.”

News of the charge comes just days after it was revealed Edwards had received a £40,000 pay rise from the company in the last year.

The former News at Ten star is said to have resigned on “medical advice”.

The BBC reported on Tuesday the seasoned broadcaster saw his salary increase by £40,000 in the same year.

Edwards’ employer had been paying him between £435,000 and £439,999 in 2022/2023, but this amount rose to between £475,000 and £479,999 between April 2023 and April 2024.
