Tokyo hero Aidan Walsh is out of the Paris Olympics after a defeat to France’s Makan Traore in the Last 32 of the men’s 71kg via a split decision.

Four judges favoured the home fighter, with one opting for a draw. But Walsh can have few complaints. The 27 year-old was twice reminded by the fight referee to engage, and later docked a point in the final round for holding in a cagey fight that failed to catch fire.

Walsh was the only medallist from Northern Ireland in Japan three years ago. He only returned to the ring after a year away from the sport following his gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
