Ireland’s dreams of winning an Olympic medal in the men’s Sevens competition were ended after Fiji mounted a late comeback to win the Quarter-Final 19-15.

James Topping’s men had built a commanding 15-7 lead midway through the second-half after a brace of tries from Chay Mullins and a Zac Ward effort but the double Olympic champions refused to bend.

Fiji hit back with two late scores and, although Ireland had a long spell of possession in search of a winner, they couldn’t find an opening and saw their hope of winning a medal end in the Stade de France.

However, there was controversy surrounding Fiji’s winning try, with the referee missing what appeared to be a knock on in the build-up to the score.
