Brampton city officials are calling on artists to submit an expression of interest, or EOI, for a new Terry Fox Memorial in Chinguacousy Park.

The call came on Wednesday, the 44th anniversary of Terry Fox’s historic visit to Brampton on July 24, 1980, during his Marathon of Hope.

The successful artist will be chosen to design, fabricate and install a memorial commemorating the 45th anniversary of his journey, which will be unveiled in the fall of 2025.

The new Terry Fox memorial will be located in Chinguacousy Park’s walking trail and close to the entrance of Terry Fox Stadium.

When Terry Fox was forced to stop on Sept. 1, 1980, 143 days after his quest to run across Canada had been launched, he had covered 5,373 kilometres but was not yet halfway to his destination. He died in June 1981, and within months Canadians picked up where he left off, organizing the first Terry Fox Run.

The Terry Fox memorial selection will be a two-stage national competition open to professional artists based in Canada beginning with an EOI followed by a Request for Proposals (RFP) from a shortlist of qualified artists.

Shortlisted artists will be notified in writing and invited to develop a design proposal for which they will receive $1,500 as compensation for their work.

Interested artists can visit Brampton.ca/publicart to submit their EOI.

The deadline is 2 p.m. on Sept. 12, 2024.
