It will be a UEFA Under-19s Championship the Northern Ireland players will not forget but also not remember with great affection.

Three games, no goals, one point and no knockout fun.

At least Northern Ireland showed more staying power than Joe Biden on Sunday night.

The home fans in the crowd of just over 2,400 at Seaview arrived with optimism but there were no late fireworks in their group campaign as Norway cruised to a 2-0 win.

A FIFA Under-20 World Cup Play-Off place even slipped away as Northern Ireland finished at the basement of Group A.

Norway grasp the Play-Off spot as Italy and Ukraine march onwards to the Semi-Finals.

Daniel Braut from Norwegian second tier side Sandnes Ulf blasted his side to victory with a goal in each half.

After a scoreless draw against Ukraine and 3-0 defeat to Italy, Northern Ireland had to dig deep in Group A to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Norway, making their debut appearance in the finals, weren’t as pleasing on the eye as Italy but they still had too much pace and quality for the home side.

Liverpool’s Kieran Morrison was dropped to the bench as manager Gareth McAuley asked Braiden Graham and Sam Glenfield to lead the charge.

Former Linfield ace Aodhan Doherty was given an opportunity to impress on the left flank but Rangers midfielder Blaine McClure was suspended.

As news of Ukraine’s goal against Italy filtered through, there was little inspiration to brighten the gloomy outlook on the Shore Road.

The opening was cagey but the hosts sprung to life on 21 minutes when Dylan Stitt stung the palms of Martin Børsheim after Glenfield invited him to inflict damage.

Norway, in their all white strip, were tidy in possession but lacked attacking guile.

Neil Lennon’s son Gallagher, playing at left back, has been impressive this tournament but he was powerless to stop his side concede an untidy goal in the 34th minute.

Braut pounced from close range as the home defence stumbled at the wrong time.

As the rain started to come down, this was turning into a damp squib for Northern Ireland.

This was a difficult enough challenge without having to chase the game against dangerous opponents.

Northern Ireland could have trailed 2-0 at the break but a header from centre back Simen Vatne Haram flew just over the top.

Still searching for their first goal of the tournament, manager McAuley needed to find some inspirational advice at the break.

Glenfield’s drive failed to trouble Børsheim but it was the visitors who looked more composed in possession.

Reece Evans replaced Joel Thompson as McAuley looked to turn the tide but by the 65th minute it was 2-0.

It was that man Braut again thrusting a dagger into Northern Ireland, rifling in his third of the tournament.

Braut then rattled the woodwork twice as the home side struggled to contain him.

Substitute Morrison forced Børsheim to make an impressive block as that elusive goal never came.

It was a disappointing end to a flat campaign for Northern Ireland but a real education for the young players.

Their Euro adventure, however, ends here.
