McIlroy comes out of the bunker well on 16 and has a birdie putt. He shares a wry smirk.

Over to Bryson who is not going to make the cut.

He has a chip off the green to make par on 17. As it stands he and McIlroy – the pair who gave us that memorable US Open battle – are a combined 21 over par.

The projected cut is now as high as +6 but Rory McIlroy is one man who won’t threatening the cut-line, +13 after 13 holes of his round.

It’s been an Open to forget for McIlroy, as his major drought is set to continue into another year.

Justin Rose delighted with his performance so far

I thought I did a really good job of understanding the golf course so far. It’s about getting my head around now what the test is going to be the next couple of days,” he told Sky Sports.

“More of the same from now on.”

McIlroy remains birdie-less for his round, on +13 after 11 holes.

Rory McIlroy isn’t the only big name in trouble out there. US Open champ Bryson DeChambeau also looks in big danger of missing the cut sitting as he does on +8 after 12 holes of his second round, with the projected cut on +5 as things stand. Ludvig Aberg and Tony Finau are both +10 with Cameron Smith on +12. Troon has cracked some of the world’s finest.

Justin Thomas is one man who has shown great resilience in the face of what you’d have to call great adversity today.

It’s probably one of the best 78s he’s ever shot!

Having began his day right in the mix on -3, the two time major champ had a nightmare front nine shooting five bogeys and one double dropping back to +6, he battled back on the back nine with three birdies to leave him as he is now, inside the cut line after finishing on +4.

Justin Rose finishes his round with a magnificent birdie putt to card a 68, leaving him at -5. Rose who had to go through final qualifying to even get into the field this week is now just two shots off Shane Lowry.

Justin Rose is one of the few players making headway out on the course. He lagged a brilliant long putt to three foot on seventeen, taking him back up to -4 as he plots his way brilliantly through the tricky conditions. He’s just three back.

Padraig Harrington shot a +2 round of 73, qualifying comfortably for the weekend.

Irish Independent reporter Brian Keogh caught up with the Dubliner after his round.

“I could easily be well under par here — two, three under par, four under par,” he said after a tough day on the greens.

“That would be required to be in contention. So I’m feeling a lot better this week. I’ll be back. I’m not retiring yet!”

Another bogey for McIlroy.

He drops back to +13 after six holes of his second round. The projected cut is +5 as it stands.

The conditions are tough but Justin Rose is hanging tough on -3, four behind Lowry with five to play.

Rory is at sixes and sevens out on the course.

The wind is causing havoc for him and he’s in trouble again on the sixth hole. He was 85 yards out there playing an 8 iron into the strong breeze and it went badly wrong.

His swing has been described by the Sky Sports commentary team as ‘worrying’ as he hits the thick stuff once again. He’s not even one third of the way through his round but his chances of making the cut already appear to be gone.

Another bogey for McIlroy. Rory doesn’t find the green on the par 3 5th resulting in another dropped shot, his 5th in the last 3 holes.

McIlroy makes a triple bogey on the Par five fourth.

He misses a three footer for the double as his week goes from bad to worse.

A catalogue of errors on that hole sees him drop back to +11, six shots outside of the projected cut mark. With the wind as high as it is, his chances of making the cut now are very slim.

This is getting nasty for McIlroy.

His lie was terrible and his chip goes flying through the green, racing into a bunker at the front. That will be his sixth shot and the best he can hope for here realistically is a double as Troon chews him up. The projected cut-mark of +5 is looking further away by the second for him.

Brian Keogh caught up with Shane Lowry after his second round of 69 that shot him to the top of the leaderboard.

“I’m ready for anything that’s thrown at me,” says Lowry.

Meanwhile, Daniel Brown is in second place two shots behind Lowry after finishing with a 72.
