San Diego FC has signed Northern Ireland international defender Paddy McNair as a free agent, according to The Athletic.

San Diego and the player are now said to be working on a loan until the winter, when the club opens pre-season camp.

San Diego will join MLS in the 2025 season.

McNair has confirmed he will be leaving Middlesbrough this summer at the expiry of his contract, the Ballyclare man taking to Instagram to confirm his intention to leave the EFL Championship club after a six-year stint on Teeside.

In a post on Instagram, McNair said: “After six years and 219 appearances, my time (at Middlesbrough) has come to an end. Big thank you to all of the players, staff and the fans for the support throughout the years. Looking forward to the next chapter.”

McNair joined Boro from North-East neighbours Sunderland in the summer of 2018 for a fee of around £5m.

He was named the club’s Player of the Year in 2020/21 season, but has made just 25 appearances this season with injuries hampering his progress. He played 219 games in total for Boro.

The former Manchester United man had been linked with a move to Rangers, as well as Robbie Keane’s Maccabi Tel Aviv and Italian side Como.

McNair, who made his international debut as a teenager in 2015, has won 67 caps for his country, scoring six goals.
