A 31-year-old man has been arrested on Thursday over a security alert incident in Derry earlier this month.

Police said the man was arrested under the Terrorism Act by detectives investigating the alert in the Creggan area of the city on Tuesday July 9.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “He is being questioned at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite in Belfast. The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to call 101.”

A public safety operation was implemented with cordons put in place around after police discovered a “suspicious device” while attending the scene of a sudden death in Magowan Park.

Following examination of the suspicious device by Ammunition Technical Officers, the alert at the time was described as an elaborate hoax.

What followed the incident was a night of disorder.

During the operation, police came under attack after with paint and petrol bombs, heavy masonry and fireworks being thrown at officers.

The PSNI said some of those involved in the disorder, which ended around midnight, were children. A DUP MLA said some involved were as young as six years old.
