BBC Proms fans were delighted as the Royal Albert Hall’s annual classical music concerts began on Friday, with Mastermind presenter Clive Myrie fronting the orchestral spectacular.

However, many were left distracted by one feature of the 59-year-old as he welcomed viewers while covering the event from a studio.

Along with co-presenter Sandi Toksvig, Myrie opened the debut show of the year which marks the start of an eight-week series of concerts.

The opening show featured an all-female line-up, with some of the biggest names in classical music joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers and the BBC Symphony Chorus.

However, viewers tuned into the prestigious event were distracted from the performances thanks to Myrie, who was sporting an eye-catching outfit.

Dressed in a red neckerchief along with a yellow shirt and black suit, complete with yellow trainers, the presenter certainly got people talking online.

Taking to X, several expressed their opinions over the loud outfit, which left fans divided.

One asked: “What is Clive Myrie wearing on the Proms. Looks like he got the wrong memo and thought he was presenting Glastonbury.”

Another penned: “Clive Myrie doing this dressed as Harry H Corbett in Steptoe and Son? #BBCProms.”

A third quipped: “Clive Myrie looks like he should be driving a team train whilst waving cheerily to the Famous Five as they set off on an adventure. #BBCProms.”

“Who the f*** dressed Clive Myrie?” another critiqued harshly, but others disagreed and shared their love for the host’s suit.

“@CliveMyrieBBC Enjoying #TheProms and your rather jaunty neckerchief! You wear it well, Clive,” one person enthused.

Another remarked: “Loving Clive’s get-up.#BBCProms #Proms2024.” (sic)

The event is continuing until well into September, with some famous faces are expected. Singer Sam Smith is set to make an appearance in August, with the 32-year-old recently addressing the backlash to his upcoming performance at the coveted event.

Speaking to Nick Grimshaw and Annie Macmanus on BBC Sounds’ Sidetracked earlier this week, they stated: “I love the proms, it’s great. And everyone needs to relax, I’m not going to get my clothes off!”

Grimshaw mocked the “hysteria” that surrounded the announcement Smith’s Proms performance, with Smith responding: “Because can you imagine if I turned up in a thong at the proms?”

Macmanus went on to joke Smith should wear “bondage gear” which Grimshaw said would be “great”.

Smith quashed the suggestion though, explaining: “Absolutely not. There’s a time and a place.”
