A Co Down town is in shock after a man was shot in a “brutal attack.

Police say the man was approached by an unknown male at a grass area near Ganaway Walk, Bangor, and shot once in his leg.

A local councillor said it was “a harrowing incident”.

The incident happened shortly after midnight on Thursday morning.

PSNI officers and ambulance staff attended the scene and the injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “This was a brutal attack which has left the victim traumatised and with significant injuries.

“People involved in carrying out this type of attack do not represent the interests of any community, nor do they contribute anything to communities.

“They do it to try and exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent. No one has the right to violate the rights of others.”

Alliance councillor Hannah Irwin said the town was in shock.

“This is a harrowing incident, and I share everyone’s shock at such senseless violence having taken place in our city,” he said.

“My thoughts and sympathies are with the victim and their family, and I hope they are receiving all the support they need as they recover.

“There is absolutely no place for this in our community, or society at large. The perpetrators represent no one other than themselves, and seek to achieve nothing other than inflicting terror and harm on our community.”

Police said enquiries are at an early stage and appealed for anyone with information in relation to this incident to contact them.
