England women’s manager Sarina Wiegman has admitted she was left ‘hurt’ by the Three Lions’ 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Xavi Simons struck early to put the Dutch in front, with the Paris Saint-Germain star beating Jordan Pickford with a powerful shot.

But England were able to turn the match around and set up a mouthwatering final showdown with Spain on Sunday.

Harry Kane netted a penalty, with the 30-year-old scoring from 12 yards after being fouled by Denzel Dumfries.

And Ollie Watkins then struck late to send England through.

Wiegman, a Dutchwoman, has congratulated Gareth Southgate’s side on their stunning triumph.

But she’s also joked she was left ‘hurt’ by the defeat in Dortmund.

“Congratulations on the win,” she said. “To be really honest, of course I wish the very best for Gareth and the team, but it did hurt.

The Lionesses all watched the game together and celebrated wildly as England got the result they wanted.

Lauren Hemp, who was part of the celebrations, added: “It was a great result for England and all of us girls were so excited and buzzing.

“Everyone was watching it together and we were all really excited.

“Obviously, England left it to the last few minutes, like they usually do, but that made it more exciting.

“They have their game at the weekend and we have two very important games coming up so it would be nice for us to share that success together with us getting a couple of wins as well.”

England have taken a while to get going at Euro 2024.

They have been abject for the most part this tournament, having picked up just five points from a possible nine in the group stages.

England needed a brilliant bicycle kick from Jude Bellingham to force extra time against Slovakia.

And penalties were required in order to get the better of Switzerland on Saturday, too.

England now appear to have finally turned up when it matters most, however.

They were brilliant against the Netherlands, creating more chances than their opponents and dominating possession.

And Southgate believes steering England to a second final of his reign is his ‘best achievement’ yet.

“This has to be the best [achievement],” he said.

“It’s another landmark, but the way we played, we played so well throughout the game.

“It was a complicated game, they kept changing, we had to respond.

“We caused them problems all night and the end is so special for the squad.

“The most important thing is that the whole squad are ready to come into the game.

“We spend a lot of time with those guys [the substitutes], and I’m so chuffed for Ollie [Watkins].

“We felt, energy wise, we were starting to lose some pressure [second half]. Ollie can press well and make those runs in behind. We thought it was a good moment to try him.

“We deserved to win tonight. We were very fluid in our formation, it wasn’t just a back three, we had to adapt all the time and the players made so many good decisions.”
