As a beauty writer I’ve tried out my fair share of unique ingredients in an effort to find hardworking products that can transform your skin. From Dragon’s Blood to Bee Venom there are few formulas that surprise me, so when ‘snail slime’ skincare burst onto the scene I was intrigued to find out for myself why it had racked up thousands of glowing reviews.

One of the most highly rated brands that incorporate snail mucin into their skincare is Korean company COSRX. I’ve been using their Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream for a few weeks and it’s now a staple in my daily skincare routine. Designed to improve the skin’s barrier, boost hydration and soothe any sensitivity, it is on sale at Amazon for £12.71, down from £27. Besides Amazon where it is currently the cheapest, you can also find it at Boots and Sephora.

The cream is formulated with 92% snail mucin, the substance snails naturally produce for hydration and protective purposes. It also contains hyaluronic acid, working in union to improve skin elasticity for an anti-ageing effect. Like me, you might be pleased to know that no snails are harmed during the process of collecting snail filtrate so you can slather your face as much as you please guilt-free.

I would describe my skin as on the drier side, with the occasional breakout, texture and redness so judging from its properties, it seemed like the ideal product for me. As you’d expect, the Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream does have a slimy almost ‘stringy’ texture. Some may find this unpleasant at first, but it quickly absorbs into your skin without leaving it sticky and I got used to it within a few uses. Immediately I noticed how soft my skin felt after application and after a few days using it every night before bed, any bumps on my skin were much flatter.

A huge Korean skincare trend is ‘glass-skin’, essentially a complexion that looks ridiculously radiant and decadently dewy. I was very impressed with how glowy my skin looked after using the COSRX cream and even received a few compliments. You don’t need to apply much to the skin as a little goes a long way. My pot looks as if it has been barely used so I estimate it will last at least six months.

I certainly understand the hype around the COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream and ahead of Amazon Prime Day it has been reduced to an excellent price if you wanted to give it a go for less. On Amazon, the product has an impressive customer rating of 4.4 out of five from more than 35,000 reviews.

One person said: “This moisturiser is all it promises and more. Great for all skin types, absorbs into the skin like a dream and doesn’t leave any nasty residue. Gives an instant brightening and plumping effect that hopefully indicates longer term positive effect. Will definitely buy again once I’ve ran out.”

Another happy reviewer wrote: “I was very surprised at how smooth it made my lines on my face after 10 mins of applying I could see results almost immediately. It’s very good as a moisturiser, I think the best I’ve used, it made my face feel amazing. I’m so excited by this product that I can’t stop telling everyone about it and getting my friends and family to try it. This is the first review I’ve ever left on a product but I was so impressed I had to.”

Like me, some users say the ‘texture is slimy’ and has a ‘strange sticky consistency’, so this might take some time getting used to. For an anti-ageing product that has a creamy formula, consider theRodial Bee Venom and Placenta 24 Carat Gold Ultimate Creme – it typically costs £750 but has been reduced by over 88% to £95. Elsewhere, Nuri’s Snail Mucin Serum containing 96% snail mucin and hyaluronic acid is £13.99.
