The funeral of Linfield FC physiotherapist Paul Butler will take place this Friday.

A service of thanksgiving will be held at in Ballyhenry Presbyterian Church in Newtownabbey at 10am on June 14.

Mr Butler passed away suddenly last Friday, June 6.

A death notice states that he was a “much loved husband, father, son and brother”.

It continues: ”Dearly loved husband of Rachael & darling daddy to Oliver, Jacob and Georgia. Devoted son to his Mum & Dad.

“Precious big brother of Stephanie and her husband Alan and their children. Son in law to Hazel and brother-in-law to Jemma and her partner Herby.”

Mr Butler’s family added that donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Lighthouse Charity, which aids mental health services in Belfast, or to Paul’s JustGiving tribute page.

Players, fans and journalists have also been among those to pay tribute to the popular clubman.

Linfield FC said: “The directors, manager, staff and players of Linfield Football Club deeply regret the untimely passing of our beloved friend and club physiotherapist Paul Butler.

“We were all deeply shocked to hear the news of Paul’s death and we extend our deepest and sincere condolences to his wife and family circle at this sad time.

“Further tributes to Paul will follow in the coming days.”

Former Linfield defender Matthew Clarke, who recently signed for Livingston, said: “So, so sad. A gentleman who had time for absolutely everyone.

“You will be missed Buts. Rest easy my friend.”

Broadcasters Joel Taggart and Stephen Watson also offered their condolences.

Mr Taggart said he was “stunned” by the news, adding: “Paul was one of the nicest lads you could ever wish to meet.

“Thoughts with all his friends and family, but particularly his dad Trevor who’s been a great friend over the years. Perspective.”

Meanwhile, Mr Watson said he was “saddened” and that his “thoughts are with his dad Trevor, his family and children.”

Larne FC said their thoughts “go out to everyone associated with Linfield and the Butler family at this difficult time.”
